Salons at Stowe "Banning Books: Who Decides?"

Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin" which is still banned in some places today.  When books are banned, how does a community explore challenging topics?  Who is in charge of what you read?

Thursday, September 16
5:00PM - 7:00PM
Katharine Day House

Our Guests
Guests for this Salon include Ramona Harten, Director of the Cheshire Public Library who in 2009 was faced with opposition by local residents for purchasing a controversial book about the 2007 murders of the Petit family.   Craig Hotchkiss, The Mark Twain House & Museum, and Sonya Green, Stowe Center, will offer their thoughts on community discussions and decisions about banning - or not banning - Twain's and Stowe's works.

Salons at Stowe topics reflect the contemporary shape of issues that concerned Harriet Beecher Stowe.  During Salons, an "Inspiration to Action" agenda is created listing specific actions that can be taken to address the issue at hand.
