Isabella’s Suffrage Hat

Isabella’s Phrygian cap

The Stowe Center is working with a professional pattern maker to recreate Isabella’s Phyrgian-style cap. In October 2020, we will host maker workshops on site, where you can join us to make your own hat (dates and times TBD).

Made to represent the Phrygian cap worn by emancipated slaves of Greece to denote their freedom, suffragists selected the style as the hat of choice to wear during the Senate “Hearing before the Committee on Woman Suffrage: January 28, 1896” in Washington, DC.

Sometimes called the liberty cap, it has a soft conical shape. Isabella’s hat, a piece in our permanent collection, is made from burgundy satin and features a red, white, and blue ribbon cockade pinned to one side.
