Writing About Race with Dr. Jelani Cobb

April 30, 2015

Katherine Kane, Stowe Center Executive Director, moderated a conversation with author, educator, and journalist Dr. Jelani Cobb about the importance of history in conversations of race, politics, and culture. Cobb said he uses history in his writing and teaching to help us better understand trends, narratives, and injustices, like the effects of President Barack Obama‘s election, and violence and unrest in Ferguson, MO and Baltimore, MD. According to Cobb, “Being able to confront our past will help us change trajectory.” He responded to questions about the implications of skin color and racial identity, the importance of education in his own life, and the power of writing and history to address and challenge racism and inequality.
