Revolutionary [Re]Imagining is an art exhibit created by artist David Jackson. The exhibit is a conversation between visual art, literary artists and activism. It encourages the viewer to think critically about the possibilities of literary activism and promotes the idea that “artists are,” as Paul Robeson said “the gatekeepers of truth. [They] are civilization’s radical voice.”
The opening program will focus on the visionary imagining of Black literary activists, revolutionary artists, and their work. Artivist include Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Billy Holiday, Tupac Shakur, Nina Simone, Nikki Giovonni, Erykah Badu and James Baldwin.
David Jackson will present his painting “Harriet’s Inconvenient Truths: Tipping the scale of Transcendence,” which emphasizes the value of literary activism, social justice, and somatic abolitionism. This piece was created specifically for the Stowe Center through Kamora’s Cultural Corner’s “Black Art Heals,” program. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore what somatic abolitionism is; the resourcing of energies that are always present in your body, in the collective body, and in the world.
